CinemaCon Studio Guide: 20th Century Fox’s Gone Girl & X-Men

Fox unloaded the majority of their summer lineup on to attendees at Cinema Con this week for a presentation featuring its most anticipated upcoming feature films including a look at the first footage shown from David Fincher’s Gone Girl.

Gone Girl, adapted from Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel, unearths the secrets at the heart of a modern marriage. On the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne reports that his beautiful wife, Amy, has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick’s portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon Nick’s lies, deceits and strange behavior attracts everyone’s attention to the theory that Nick is the murderer. The much awaited footage was cut in to a trailer and should be making its way online shortly considering the film is slated for release on October 3rd. The dark feature has a cast worthy of the novel with hollywood’s elite including Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry.

As well Gone Girl Fox’s presentation also gave us a new look into the upcoming sequel X-Men Days of Future Past which looks magnificent bringing together the casts of the previous and rebooted X-Men franchises with a darker more thrilling tone than the 2011 X-Men First Class. The sequel follows the ultimate X-Men ensemble as they fight a war for the survival of the species across two time periods. The characters from the original X-Men film trilogy join forces with their younger selves in an epic battle that must change the past to save our future.

Another sequel cooked up by Fox for this summer season is Dawn of the Planet of the Apes which looks incredible. Fox screened a extended trailer and a sequence from the upcoming film which will be making its way to theaters in July. Don’t panic just yet Fox dose has a upcoming film set in this reality for its slate, Matthew Vaughn’s Secret Service which stars Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Firth and follows a veteran secret agent takes a young upstart under his wing. Although there was very little showing of their upcoming film except from a single sequence its is certain to be a box office success both domestically in this October and worldwide.

Animation wise Fox is focusing on sequels to its already packed showcase with How to Train Your Dragon 2, the trailer to the sequel debuted at Ciema Con giving us a first look at the film which looks to have had an animation upgrade and is set to make a big splash at the box office with its predecessor drawing in $43.7 million on its opening weekend and $494,878,759 worldwide to date all on a production budget of $165 million. Another animated film showboated at the presentation was Fox’s next theatrical release and sequel the animated family adventure Rio 2. The movie was promoted with a performance of the song ‘Take You to Rio’ from the film’s soundtrack, which was performed live by B.o.B. alongside Ester Dean. Rio 2 will be making its way to cinemas on April 11th. Some of the other celebrity guests at the presentation which were there to support their upcoming productions include Shailene Woodley, turning out in support of her new feature The Fault in Our Stars, along with Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann, both introducing their film The Other Woman.

Although Fox couldn’t screen any footage from their movies still in production they did give attendees some details and first looks regarding their films slated to be released in 2015 and beyond including looks at Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings, the long awaited Night at the Museum 3 and Guillermo Del Toro’s Book of Life.
