20th Century Fox brought an awards centered slate for the studio along with them to CinemaCon this year, with some breathtaking footage as per usual. The presentation was full of celebration following a record-breaking year with a worldwide box-office gross of $5.5 billion, Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson called their 2015 slate “equally stellar“.
Despite last year bringing along it’s more commercial films to lead the CinemaCon presentation, 20th Century Fox turned the tables this year. During their presentation Fox announced three possible contenders, at least two of which are certain to be making the rounds in the final stretch of the awards season this winter.
The first is David O. Russell’s Joy, which tells a story based on the life of a struggling Long Island single mom Joy Mangano, portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence, as she became one of the country’s most successful entrepreneurs. David O. Russell and his ensemble have already received Oscar nominations for the past two consecutive years with Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, making Joy one of the stronger contenders early this season. Joy will be released on December 25th one of the final days of eligibility for the awards.
The second contender being The Martian, which directed by Ridley Scott is destined to be a visual effects masterpiece combined with an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Sebastian Stan, Kate Mara, and Michael Pena. There was also package of footage screened of this science fiction adventure featuring a voice over from Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, which gave us our first look at the depiction of the surface of Mars and a giant NASA facility — both of which look visually realistic and astounding.
Saving the best for last, the most promising contender is The Revenant, directed by Birdman helmer Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The footage was brilliant, especially considering Inarritu, shooting in the Canadian wilderness is relying on the natural light.
Moving into the Fox’s summer and commercial slate, the studio unloaded a splendid package of trailers and footage to the attendees at CinemaCon. The most anticipated being for Fantastic Four, Fox brought the entire cast out to Vegas including Kate Mara, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Bell for the presentation.
Fox also brought out a heavy hitter guest 50 Cent to spike more anticipation for Melissa McCarthy’s Spy, which screened earlier in the week at CinemaCon. 50 Cent walked onstage and said “I’m Melissa McCarthy, I use this 50 Cent costume to get into places.”
It appears 20th Century Fox could outmatch themselves this year with their 2015 slate.
