Last night the cast, writers and producers of The Mindy Project, including Mindy Kaling and Chris Messina, returned for a second time to the annual PaleyFest TV festival to be joined by a crowd of screaming fans at the Dolby Theater – in the heart of Los Angeles.
If you haven’t seen the show the series follows a young Ob/Gyn doctor balances her personal and professional life, surrounded by quirky co-workers in a small New York City medical office.
The panel at the fest was better than last years, especially with the attending fans getting to see a pre-air screening of the show’s April 1st returning episode as well as the the cast discussing the most recent episodes and moments of the series second season.
The highlights from the panel have been transcribed for all you Mindy fans out there, just below.
One of the main highlights of the evening was when the cast talked about the kiss and how it came to be. Mindy Kaling talked about the moment from the writers perspective saying “As writers, we can write dialogue and arcs and stories, but we can’t write chemistry, and for the longest time, we didn’t know.” He continued to say “you can’t script chemistry. You can’t script when Chris makes the choice as Danny to always touch my back as I walk across the street. After a while, it became not if they would do it, but when would they do it.” Matt Warburton also added that they knew the kiss had to be on an airplane although they were uncertain of where the moment should occur in the season.
Then the cast continued onwards to talk about Danny Castellano’s dance to “Try Again” in the ‘Christmas Sex Trap’ episode. While that cast discussed the moment Chris Messina said “When they first presented the idea to me, I was extremely nervous and mad I had told them I dance, but then I thought it was a really original and fresh thing to come up with.” Later when the questions where tossed to the audience a fan played Aaliyah’s “Try Again” song from her phones speaker, leading Danny to live perform the dance on the Dolby theater’s Paleyfest sage.
The final highlight of the night, was when the cast discussed who they would like to see guest star on the show. Drawing up their guest star wish list with the names of, Woody Harrelson, Dustin Hoffman Idris Elba, and Sam Rockwell, being dropped. Kaling also talked about James Franco’s Mindy Project set visit saying said “James Franco came to set, said hello to us, sat, we were trying to make small talk with him. It’s impossible to make small talk with James Franco. But when he saw Beth, he lit up.”
The current season of The Mindy Project returns to the air on April 1, 2014.
