PaleyFest: Pretty Little Liars Cast Discuss Auditions & The Finale

The cast, crew and producers of Pretty Little Liars, along with Troian Bellisario better known as Spencer Hastings, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell and the best thing to ever happen to cupcakes Ashley Benson, arrived in style for the annual PaleyFest TV festival last night at the Dolby Theater in the heart of Hollywood. With a audience of over 2,000 fans excited to see their favorite stars from the Pennsylvania set ABC Family drama.

If you haven’t seen the show the series follows a group of teenage girls drifting apart after the group’s leader, Alison DiLaurentis, goes missing. Her body is found and the girls are reunited at her funeral. All four begin receiving text messages from the mysterious ‘A’, who seems to know many of the group’s deepest secrets, some of which only the late Alison had knowledge of. The girls join forces against A’s scheming and try to uncover the mystery of Alison’s death.

The panel at the fest was better than last years closing Pretty Little Liars Paleyfest panel opening with the cast discussing their first auditions for the show and their moment on the set of the pilot episode of the series.

The highlights from the panel have been transcribed for all you PPL fans out there, just below.

One of the main highlights of the evening was when the cast begun discussing their audition stories, especially with Ashley as she came in to the audition just after her previous show was canceled, and the tales from the set of the pilot. Troian Bellisario ‘Spencer’ told her audition story saying “So, pretty was in the title and I put together my best outfit, I actually did my hair, which took like two hours, and makeup and I walked in and I did my audition. They called me back and they said its great we want you to see you actually do your hair and makeup this time and like just kinda do it up and I said ok, I can do it and the scene I auditioned with was the scene when spencer flirts with Wren and its actually a scene that was not in the pilot.

Talking about Spencer being pushed to the edge in the most recent episodes of the shows a producers said “I think the extremes, the stakes are getting higher and higher and with Spencer feeling that she may have been part of this murder. I think these things push people to an edge you know to some degree and thats where we can explore in more really vibrant ways.

Ian Harding then went on to talk about his character Ezra Fitz’s dark turn in their season saying “So I was told that it was going to get a little twirly and I was excited you know, because its a change of pace the past few seasons it’s been very wonderful and fun to play the sort of push pull of should I be in this relationship with ‘Aria’ or not and I was kind of like there’s something else here though and I couldn’t really put my finger on it until it was said, this is why and so its been a joy to get to be a little nasty for a little bit.

One of the other highlights of the night was when the series producers talked about the season finale coming up saying that we are going to see another “shocking Ezra twist” and “there will be a ton of questions answered on Tuesday. You guys have earned those answers. You’ve been very patient with us. Thank you for that.

The final and sweetest highlight of the night, was when Sasha Pieterse better known as Alison DiLaurentis thanked the crew and everyone working on the show saying “Most of our crew have been the same since the beginning, so it in all sense comes down to every single one of them, and we click, and I think that shows on screen just subconsciously just because we love what we do. But not only that, its not just our cast, it comes down to everyone who helped make it. If someone out of that crew didn’t do their job that day we would be screwed, because we each play a part with what we do and they help us and we help them and it just its very rare that you get a cast and crew that click that way and now that we’ve been on for so long so I think thats actually why the magic happens.”
