Warner Bros took to Wonder Con this weekend, swarming with Godzilla fans all attending for a preview look this summers electrifying release of Godzilla at the convention’s panel – which was attended by Godzilla director Gareth Edwards.
The main highlight of the panel, was when Warner Brothers announced that they had brought along an entire sequence to screen to attendees. The five minutes of footage screened at Godzilla’s Wonder Con panel featured an action sequence in its entirety from the film. The sequence shows Godzilla as he strikes land on a tropical city, bringing with him a mega tsunami as he crawls out of the sea – some of which was shown in the recently released trailers. As Godzilla then makes his way inland causing destruction in his wake he reaches an Airport, where Godzilla encounters a creature. Which gives us our first glimpse of the creatures accompanying Godzilla in the upcoming motion picture, while it was said that the creature was completely new it appears to have a sense of belonging to the Godzilla world. Especially given its similar appearance to that of Japanese Godzilla creatures Megaguirus and Kaiju, although its mostly being described as looking like a preying mantis. The creature also affirms director Gareth Edwards position of bringing a Japanese like version Godzilla to our screens – compared to the American version of the mythical beast.
During the panel Godzilla director Gareth Edward talked about what he was trying to achieve whilst directing Godzilla saying “I grew up watching Spielberg movies, What they did so well, as well as having an epic fantastic spectacle, they made the characters feel real and human. We were trying to do the same thing here.” Gareth continued to say “I thought it was going to be the easiest thing in the world, designing Godzilla, but everyone has an opinion and designing Godzilla was the hardest thing in the world, because everyone has an opinion.”
The footage, concluding with a complete shot of Godzilla, along with Gareth ramped up a lot of applause for the breathtaking summer feature which is definitely going to rake in the money with advanced ticket sales for its opening weekend. Although, the feature will be released in the middle of three other predicted summer blockbusters as the Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be released in the beginning of May, followed by Tom Cruise’s Edge Of Tomorrow and then X-Men Days Of Future Past which will be closing the month. However, with all these releases in one month it could become a May bust for the studios with a flat even box-office.
Godzilla will be making its way to cinemas in the UK on May 15th and stateside a day later on May 16th.
Part of the Wondercon footage was also combined within the recently released Godzilla TV spot:
