Ratings: Series Finale Draws Highest ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Audience In History

The farewell hour long finale to the TV series How I Met Your Mother which aired on Monday night, certainly delivered in viewers for CBS setting new series highs. The two part finale has become the the most-watched episode in the series in its history with 12.9 million viewers.

The series has aired nine season since its debut in 2005, and since then the show has become CBS’ second biggest sitcom just behind The Big Bang Theory. The series finale received ratings of 5.3 in adults 18-49 and 5.8 in adults 18-34. Making it the night’s top show in the adults 18-49 demographic.

Over the past near decade on CBS, the so-called gang Ted Mosby, Robin Scherbatsky, Barney Stinson, Lily Aldrin and Marshall Eriksen. The series follows a love story told in reverse from the year 2030. Ted Mosby is relaying the story of how he met his wife to his daughter and son. The story starts in the year 2005, when then twenty-seven year old architect Ted was spurred on to want to get married after his best friends from his college days at Wesleyan, lawyer Marshall Eriksen, who was his roommate at the time and kindergarten teacher Lily Aldrin, got engaged after nine years of dating each other. Ted’s new quest in life was much to the dismay of his womanizing friend, Barney Stinson. But soon after Marshall and Lily’s engagement, Ted believed that his life mate was going to be news reporter and aspiring news anchor Robin Scherbatsky, who, despite having had a romantic relationship with her after this time, ended up being who the kids know as their “Aunt” Robin. As Ted relays the story to his kids, the constants are that their Uncle Marshall, Aunt Lily, Uncle Barney and Aunt Robin are always in the picture and thus have something to do with how he got together with their mother.

In comparison, its the first sitcom finale to bring in over twelve million viewers and a 5.8 in adults rating in a while. Compared to last years sitcom finales its a long way above The Office finale which received an adults rating of 2.9 rating and 30 Rock with its 1.9 rating in adults.

Other shows which aired on Monday night alongside the How I Met Your Mother finale included Better Lives (2.7 adults), Mom (2.2 adults), Intelligence (1.2 adults), The Blacklist (2.8 adults) Dancing With the Stars (2.2 adults) Bones (1.5 adults), The Following (1.4 adults), Star-Crossed (0.4 adults) and The Tomorrow People (0.5 adults).
